The site that the Gladewater Municipal Airport
currently occupies was used as an airfield with
a grass landing strip prior to 1947. In 1947,
the Civil Aeronautics Administration, the Texas
Department of Aviation, and the City of Gladewater
provided funds for the purchase of 124.27 acres
from A.F. and Bethel Shepperd for the development
of an airport to be owned and operated by the
City of Gladewater.
Gladewater Municipal Airport is owned by the City of Gladewater and is a public-use
general aviation airport located in Gregg County, Texas. The airport operates two
asphalt runways: Runway 14/32, which measures 3,299 feet in length and 75 feet
in width; and Runway 17/35, measuring 2,298 feet in length and 50 feet in width.
The aviation-related tenants at Gladewater Municipal Airport support 11 jobs, with
an estimated direct payroll of $345,000. The direct output attributable to the
airport is estimated at approximately $1.5 million. Additionally, the 2,900 general
aviation visitors that arrive at the airport each year support 11 visitor-related jobs
and $225,000 in payroll. General aviation visitors are also responsible for nearly
$363,000 in direct economic output.
When combined, the general aviation tenants and visitors at the airport are
responsible for more than $3.2 million in total economic output, 34 full-time jobs,
and $925,000 in payroll.
The primary aviation-related activities that take place at Gladewater Municipal
Airport on a regular basis are recreational flying and flight training/education.
Additionally, the airport provides several community-based services and programs
to enhance the health, safety, welfare, and quality of life of area citizens. Such
services at Gladewater Municipal Airport include Civil Air Patrol search-and-rescue
operations and aviation information/education programs. Gladewater
Municipal Airport also serves as a gateway for visitors who use the facility to
access local recreational opportunities.
The Gladewater Municipal Airport consists of
a terminal building, 2 runways, 6 enclosed city-owned
hangars, 10 T-hangars and 49 privately owned
hangars.
